Week 7 PLE post

Q. What is the role of technology in providing dynamic experiences for your students?
A. Technology makes a learning experience more dynamic in that it allows you to present teaching material in a more interesting way. For example, instead of simply telling the students what the Grand Canyon looks like, using Google Earth you can show them up close images of its majesty. You can make a subject like history more interesting than just a lecture by creating a powerpoint with colors, fonts, pictures, and effects to keep the students' attention engaged.
Q. What are some ways that technology might actually detract from learning?
A. Technology could detract from learning by being too time consuming due to malfunctions, computer break-downs, etc. Also, since there is so much that can be experienced through technology, it could cause the students to forget to savor the real life experiences around them. It's important as a teacher to find a good balance when using technology.
Q. What are three examples of effective technology that you have used or experienced?
A. My first example that I have experienced is the use of blogging. Right now, my 7-year old cousin has been in and out of the hospital with serious health problems. His family created a blog which they update frequently, giving information about new developments in his progress. This has been a huge help for me and their family and friends, and has unified us all. The second example would be facebook. Even though it can be time-consuming, it is a great way for me to stay caught up with my friends. Without it I wouldn't know what many of them are doing with their lives. Is it a little bit ridiculous? Yes. But it's still a great tool to stay connected:) The third example I have experienced would be creating the digital storytelling videos. I really enjoyed doing that! It was so neat to see the pictures, music, narration and everything come together to create a learning experience. I would really like to continue using that technology.
